Courses Offered

What all courses are available to international students?

The University of Oklahoma offers over 170 academic programs for undergraduate applicants, and over 120 graduate-level programs are taught at the Norman campus alone. It also offers dual degree programs that allow international students to pursue two degrees simultaneously. Students can also pursue an accelerated degree program to secure a master's degree in a shorter time frame.

Undergraduate students who fail to meet the entry requirements can seek admission to the First-Year Foundation Programs that help them improve their communication skills and academic grades and prepare them for further studies.

Eligibility & Documents Required

What are the eligibility requirements?

To be eligible for a bachelor's degree, international students need to complete 12 years of studies, including elementary and secondary education. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is also required to seek admission as an international freshman applicant. SAT or ACT scores are optional.

To earn a master's degree, students must have a bachelor's degree in the relative field of study. Also, students holding an equivalent degree obtained from a university or educational institution accredited by the Ministry of Education of the student's home country are eligible for master-level programs.

Apart from this, international students need to showcase English language proficiency. They can submit any of the following scores:

English Exams Accepted

Minimum Expected Scores

High Scores for PG Courses

TOEFL iBT

79 or higher

100

IELTS

6.5 or higher

7.0

Note: Some programs may require additional entry requirements, and these requirements can also vary from one course to another. Therefore, it is advisable that students refer to OU's official website for the exact details on entry requirements.

What all documents are needed for application?

Applicants must submit official transcripts from each institution attended. If the transcripts are issued in a language other than English, the university requires the official, original language document as well as an official, or certified, English translation. OU charges a non-refundable amount of USD 90 for undergraduate applications and USD 100 for graduate applications.

Note: In addition to the tuition fees, there are additional costs for health insurance, international student fees, and other living expenses which are not included here. The tuition rates and costs are subject to change each academic year. Students are encouraged to check the website for the latest updates.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

International students can be awarded three types of scholarships - Scholarships in Centralized Academic Scholarship Hub (CASH), Scholarships outside CASH, and Non-OU scholarships.

Non-OU scholarship consists of a scholarship of USD 200 offered by the Norman Lions Club in February, April, March, November, and October. This scholarship is offered to enhance the diversity of the weekly meetings organized by the club and provide relevant exposure to international students about the American culture.

Also, need-based scholarships are offered to students who demonstrate financial requirements or the need for financial support.  Recently, the university also offered the OU International Student Pandemic Scholarship of USD 1,000 to students who required financial support due to the crisis prompted by the pandemic. Other scholarships offered outside CASH include those meant for students of specific countries. Scholarships within CASH are mostly awarded based on academic excellence and outstanding achievement, and only full-time students are eligible for these grants.

To be eligible for these scholarships, undergraduate students need to have a GPA score ranging from 2.5 to 3.0 and graduate students need to have a GPA score ranging from 3.0 to 3.5. Students need to apply before early February through the CASH portal to win these merit-based scholarships.

How to apply to UG courses?

International freshman applicants can apply through either of the portals:

  • OU Application (university portal)
  • Coalition Application
  • Common Application

If you are planning to apply to other US universities as well, you should apply through the Coalition or Common App portal. Do note that only one application from either of the portals will be accepted. Do not submit application from multiple portal as this can lead to rejection of your application altogether.

How to apply to PG courses?

Graduate students must check the entry requirements of the program in which they plan to enroll before applying through the online application portal of OU. The steps given below need to be followed to complete the online application:

Step 1: Visit the online application portal for graduate students: gograd.ou.edu/apply/. New students need to register. Those who have already created an account can continue with the application procedure.

When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?

Once a student submits his application form, they will receive a notification through an email within four to six weeks. However, students need to check the application portal irrespective of whether they have applied for a UG or PG program to stay updated on the progress of their application.

Student Diversity & Preferred Profile

What are the chances to get into this university?

International graduates who want to enroll in PG programs should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 along with a bachelor's or equivalent degree. Students can also take the GRE test to improve their chances of securing admission. However, it is not mandatory to take this test as the academic grades and English language proficiency scores are the main criteria for selecting an application. The students of Indian origin must remember that a bachelor's degree of three years will not be sufficient to secure admission. This is because only a four-year bachelor's degree (secured after four years of study) is considered equivalent to a US bachelor's degree.

Undergraduates with a 3.0 GPA and adequate English language proficiency test scores can expect to get selected for a UG program at OU. Students can also submit their SAT/ACT scores to strengthen their profile. These scores are also useful to secure an international scholarship. Also note that freshman applicants must be 17 years old before starting their study terms on the first day at the university.

How many Indian/international students are studying at the university?

Each year the university aims to admit more international students. About 2,000 international students study at OU representing over 125 countries. In 2019-2020, the university enrolled a total student body of 28,079 applicants, including 21,768 undergraduates and 6,311 graduates.

Part Time Work While Studying

Can I work while studying here?

Students with J-1 and F-1 Visas are permitted to work on the campus. However, to work outside the campus, they will need authorization from respective departments. Students with an F-1 Visa can work up to 20 hours per week during the spring and fall semesters, and work more than 20 hours per week during vacations. International students can apply for an on-campus job 30 days before the start of their scheduled classes. Students facing financial hardship can ask the USCIS for permission to work outside the campus.

F-1 students who complete an Optional Practical Training (OPT) become eligible for off-campus jobs for up to one year after earning a bachelor's degree from OU. Students with J-1 Visa can enroll in the J-1 Academic Training, making them eligible for training and work. It also makes them eligible to acquire formal experience in their field of study.

Assistantships for Graduate Students

International graduate students can apply for assistantships by filling up the application form found in their respective departments. Students who submit the necessary documents before the stipulated deadline are considered for these positions. They are normally allowed to work for up to 20 hours per week. These students must showcase their skills in reading and writing English to increase their chances of landing a job as an assistant.

Campuses & Accommodation

How many colleges and campuses does the university have?

The University of Oklahoma has three campuses in Oklahoma and is made up of 18 colleges. The main campus is the Norman Campus, while the other two are the Health Sciences Center (HSC) and the Tulsa Campus. OU also offers study abroad opportunities at several locations and OU campuses overseas, such as Italy, Mexico, Brazil, and Turkey (in progress).

Is on-campus housing available?

OU provides on-campus housing options to international students. As a freshman applicant, a student under the age of 20 needs to apply for accommodation at one of the university's residence halls. Other international students have the freedom to choose an accommodation that suits their lifestyle. They can choose to live either in on-campus residence halls or apartments. It is recommended that international students apply for accommodation as soon as possible as the university usually maintains a waiting list for both apartments and residence halls.
